As Hollywood kicked into awards mode at the Palm Springs International Film Festival Saturday, there is one particular face that you can’t help but notice. A look at some of the highlights behind the scenes
Lupita Nyong’o, the 12 Years a Slave actress was the breakthrough performance award winner and was so tearfully overwhelmed onstage that she almost forgot her formidable trophy on the podium.
It might have had to do with her struggles to make it out west from New York in the midst of the winter storm Hercules.
“It was a day of trying to get on a flight, two flights I was on were canceled,” she said backstage. “But I was so overwhelmed onstage. There were so many eyeballs on you and I was so grateful I almost forgot the award.”
The actors from Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom are more than just co-stars in the Nelson Mandela biopic (Elba plays Mandela while Harris portrays Winnie Mandela). They also served as impromptu wardrobe consultants.
Before stepping onstage to present the rockers from U2 with an award, Elba grabbed Harris’ hand.
“Hold on,” he said, asking her to give one final look-over for his black-tie outfit. She eyed the British star from head to toe and gave a thumbs-up. Then Elba gave a cursory inspection of Harris. Satisfied, the two then made a wardrobe malfunction-free trip to the stage
